An example of a so-called 'rack'
admission ticket used at the
20th Century , Johannesburg
from the 1950s onwards.
During the intermission a 'Pass
Out' was handed to each patron
wishing to leave the theatre and
was handed back to the doorman
on re-entry. A different coloured
pass out was used at each new
performance for that day.
The photo above was taken in the foyer of the Capitol Theatre
Pretoria during a 'Naval Night' on 4th May 1953 when the
nautical drama 'The Cruel Sea' was shown.
Famous Hollywood movie star Donald
O'Connor, who would later achieve screen
immortality in MGM's 1952 musical 'Singin'
In The Rain', visited South Africa in July
1948 - together with the winners of
Universal-International's 'Hollywood
Beauty Contest'.
