ALHAMBRA
Durban
CINEMA
SOUVENIRS
The original Alhambra Theatre in Durban opened in 1923. It was situated at 52
Berea Road in Durban and was designed by architect Arthur George Cross.
The Alhambra had a seating capacity of 1020 housed in both stalls and circle
sections. The theatre was used alternatively during the 1950s and 60s as a
cinema as well as a live theatre venue, under the management of African
Consolidated Theatres and later Fox Theatres. Today the building houses a
church.
In the 1950s, as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Schlesinger
Organisation, the original theatre was demolished and re-built as the
modern theatre seen in the photo above.
